It is distributed electronically on a monthly basis. It gives information about policies pertaining to diversity in the classroom and elsewhand how important it is to share light on the issues to families.

There is an article that caught my attention. Preschool Curriculum: What's in It for Children and Teachers
Report from the Albert Shanker Institute, 2009
As the Obama administration turns its attention to expanding access to quality preschool education, a new Shanker Institute report shows that the efficacy of preschool programs, both in stimulating children's cognitive development and effectively reducing the achievement gap, can be significantly improved if programs are aligned with new research about how children learn in the academic areas of oral language, literacy, math, and science

The organization highlights English Language Learners who struggle to adapt to their new environment. As Dr. Grace (2011) suggested that parents should continue to speak the home language and provide opportunities for children to engage in the home language while they learn a new language. As professionals  we have to change our way of thinking towards demography and diversity.

The organization directs our attention in helping our children succeed in a diverse environment. I am aware that:
·         Our instructional practice should support children's language;
Our classroom should be rich in language of different cultures

·         All children should be engaged in developmentally and culturally appropriate activities that will promote all aspects of learning and development.

  1. Theresa,
    Great information regarding the curriculum of preschoolers. At my Head Start Center we are currently collaborating with our local Board of Education to align our curriculum with their Pre-k and Kindergarten curriculum, which I think will be very beneficial in the child's academic status.

  2. Theresa,
    Achievement Gap seems to be the key word in so many articles for so many years and it is still goes on. It would be great, that if all pre-school programs could align their curriculum with early elementary curriculum. But I wonder who is going to help all the programs to come to a par with it.

  3. Hi Theresa,

    You chose a very important issue that is special to me: Preschool Curriculum:What's in it for Children and Teachers. In the school where I have worked in pre-k for almost five years, the curriculum have made some changes. The kindergarten and pre-k teachers are working together academically to prepare pre-k students and parents for the transition to kindergarten. Personally, this will benefit the parents and student because they will be both prepared when the transition times comes.

  6. Theresa,
    Demographics and Diversity is a huge issue and will continue to be relevant for a long time as the effects of globalization continues to fortify its hold on all parts of the world. This therefore makes the article on Preschool Curriculum quite relevant as we seek to ensure that our practices do depict a truly diverse teaching and learning environment. It really calls for effective planning and close monitoring because it is quite easy to say we are embracing all cultures when in truth and in fact several children's development is not being properly addressed.

  7. Theresa,

    As a Universal Pre-K teacher, I found your blog posting to be very informative. I plan on examining my curriculum and assuring it's alignment to close the achievement gap even further. Transition is something that we do address. We do all kinds of transition activities such as reading books about kindergarten, participating in classes with the kindergarten students and even writing the Kindergarten students letters about questions the students have.
